VWAP Band Mean Reversion (Approx.): 47 of 90 segments profitable, deepest drawdown 22.3%
Bets on Bollinger band reversion: buy the lower band and exit at the moving average in ranging markets; a sustained downtrend triggers repeated stop-outs.
Every test uses an all-in compounding position — the full available cash goes into each entry, so profits increase the size of the next entry and losses shrink it. Read the numbers above with that in mind.
The empirical conclusion for VWAP Band Mean Reversion (Approx.) on the BTCUSDT 15-minute timeframe can be summarized as follows: most splits achieve small positive returns, but results are sensitive to how the data is split, and a single loss is clearly larger than a single profit. In the 90-segment backtest, 47 segments were profitable; the median segment return was +1.9%, the highest was +33.7%, the lowest was −17.6%, and the deepest drawdown across the 90 segments was 22.3%; no segment hit liquidation. First, answer the question readers care about most: did it beat “doing nothing”? Over the same period, the average segment return of buy-and-hold was −3.0%, while the strategy’s median segment return was +1.9%. The median and mean here are not strictly aligned measures, but the directional gap is clear enough—at least in this data, the return distribution of timing entries sits higher than always holding. However, the source of the advantage is very concentrated: a median of +1.9% means half of the segments sit slightly above zero, and the few segments that truly lift the overall result are the minority—the best was round 13, segment 5 (2026-06-04 to 2026-08-08), with a segment return of +33.7% and a deepest drawdown of only 6.5% in that segment; the worst was round 3, segment 2 (2025-11-06 to 2026-02-02), with a segment return of −17.6% and a deepest drawdown of 22.3%. Losses are concentrated and burst-like, not an even bleed. Two numbers explain this strategy’s nature better: profitable segments 47/90, and average profit per trade $350 versus average loss per trade $718. The former shows it is making money only slightly more than half the time; the latter shows its return structure is “win small, lose big”—each loss is more than twice each profit, so it must rely on a higher hit rate or a few smooth moves to compensate. This also matches its core assumption: after price deviates from the VWAP band (or the edge of the Bollinger Band), it will revert toward the center; it bets that mean reversion is statistically dominant. So when does it fail? When price does not come back but keeps moving in one direction. In trending markets, price can hug one side of the band for a long time; the reversion signal triggers repeatedly and is stopped out repeatedly—this is exactly where the average loss figure of $718 comes from. In ranges where volatility contracts and price grinds repeatedly around VWAP, signals trigger frequently but each move is very small, leaving limited room after frictions. In other words, it needs “back-and-forth with amplitude” and fears two states most: “one-way move that never turns back” and “narrow-range grinding”; the 22.3% drawdown in the worst segment is the cost of the former state. Three methodological points must be made clear. First, the 90 backtests are not 90 independent samples; they are 90 splits obtained by cutting the same history into 6 non-overlapping windows, randomly jittering the window boundaries, and repeating for 15 rounds. The random seed is fixed, so anyone using the same seed can reproduce exactly the same 90 splits; therefore 47/90 measures whether the conclusion is robust to the splitting method and cannot be read as the strategy’s true win rate. Second, bb_period, bb_stddev, and ma_period were not given in the original text and were filled in according to industry convention; no parameter sweep was done this time, so it is impossible to judge whether the +1.9% median return just happens to fall on some relatively good parameter value. Third, the sample covers only one instrument and one timeframe, BTCUSDT 15-minute; the interval length is limited, and there is no cross-instrument or cross-timeframe replication. This content is a replication/validation based on historical data, does not constitute investment advice, and this platform does not recommend, rate, or rank.
Two-window comparison
The same strategy, two of its 90 windows side by side: the best-performing one and the worst drawdown. Same scale on both — if one looks smooth and the other jagged, that is the strategy's instability, not a chart artifact.
