Pip Value
$10.0000
per 1 pip movement on EUR/USD (USD account)
A 1-pip move in your favor earns you $10.0000 per 1 lot(s).
How is this calculated?
Pip Value = Lot Size × Contract Size × Pip Size × Quote→Account Rate
Result is in your account currency.

What is a pip value?
Pip value is the amount of money a single pip of price movement makes or loses for a given position. Forex quotes movement in pips, but your account is funded in a real currency, and pip value is the bridge between the two. Know it and you know, before any trade, exactly what each tick of movement means for your bottom line — the first step in converting a stop distance in pips into a dollar risk you can actually plan around.
Key concepts
Pip
The smallest standard price increment, usually 0.0001 for most pairs.
Pip value
The profit or loss per pip for a given lot size and account currency.
Quote-to-account rate
The conversion from the quote currency into your account currency.
A worked example with real numbers
- 1
Choose the pair and lot size
You trade 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD, quoted in USD.
- 2
Identify the pip size
For most pairs a pip is 0.0001, so one pip on 100,000 units moves the position by 100,000 × 0.0001 = $10.
- 3
Convert to the account currency
If your account is in EUR, that $10 is converted at the current EUR/USD rate to give the pip value in your own currency.
- 4
Use it for risk
A 20-pip stop now has a known dollar value — multiply by the pip value — which feeds directly into position sizing.
How to use it
Choose the pair
The currency pair being traded.
Enter lot size
The position size in lots.
Enter account currency
The currency of your account balance.
Read the pip value
The dollar (or account-currency) value of one pip.
The formula, step by step
Pip value
Pip value = Contract size × Pip size × Exchange rate
Converted into the account currency.
Mistakes traders make
✗ Assuming the pip value is the same for every pair
✓Contract size, pip size, and the quote-to-account rate all differ by pair. JPY pairs and exotics quote different pip sizes.
✗ Forgetting the account currency conversion
✓The per-pip amount is first in the quote currency, then converted to your account currency. A USD and EUR account show different pip values.
✗ Treating pip value as fixed while the position is open
✓When the quote-to-account rate moves, the pip value in your account currency drifts with it, especially on pairs quoted in a different currency.
When this tool fits — and when it does not
Use it when
- ✓Before a forex trade, to convert a stop distance in pips into money.
- ✓When sizing a position from a dollar risk budget.
- ✓When comparing the risk of different pairs at the same lot size.
Skip it when
- ✗Trading a pair without knowing its pip value.
- ✗Using the same pip value across pairs with different conventions.
- ✗Ignoring the account-currency conversion on cross pairs.
Practical tips that actually help
Work from pips to dollars to size
Multiply the pip distance to your stop by the pip value, match it to the risk budget, and the lot size follows.
Know the pipette difference
A pipette is a tenth of a pip, quoted at the fifth decimal. Brokers that quote pipettes make the movement look finer — convert carefully.
Recheck when the cross rate swings
For pairs quoted in a currency different from your account, the pip value moves with that cross. Recheck before big trades.

Frequently asked questions
Why does pip value change between pairs?▾
Different contract sizes, pip sizes and quote-to-account rates all change the per-pip value.
What is the difference between a pip and a pipette?▾
A pip is the standard fourth decimal place for most pairs; a pipette is a tenth of a pip, quoted at the fifth decimal place. Some JPY pairs use different conventions, so check the specific pair.
Why does my account currency change the pip value?▾
Because the per-pip amount is first calculated in the quote currency, then converted into your account currency. The same position can show different pip values in a USD account versus a EUR account.
How does pip value feed into position sizing?▾
Position sizing needs to turn a stop distance in pips into a dollar risk. Multiplying the pip distance by the pip value gives that dollar amount, which is then matched against your risk budget to find the lot size.
Does pip value stay constant while a position is open?▾
Only if the quote-to-account exchange rate is fixed. When that cross rate moves, the pip value in your account currency drifts with it, which matters most when the pair is quoted in a currency different from your account.
