What is VWAP?

VWAP — the volume-weighted average price — is the average price of an asset across a session, weighted by how much volume traded at each level. It is the watermark institutions use to judge execution: buy below VWAP and you traded better than the session's average; buy above it and you paid up. For intraday traders it doubles as a live reference level — an evolving line that shows where the session's money is on balance. The calculator builds VWAP from the high, low, close, and volume rows you paste in.

Concepts

Key concepts

Typical price

The average of high, low and close for a period.

Volume weighting

Periods with more volume contribute more to the average.

Benchmark use

A fill above VWAP when buying is worse than the average market price — and vice versa.

Worked example

A worked example with real numbers

  1. 1

    Gather the period data

One session has two bars: the first with high 101, low 99, close 100 and volume 1,000; the second with high 103, low 101, close 102 and volume 3,000.

  2. 2

    Compute each typical price

    Bar 1 typical price is (101 + 99 + 100) ÷ 3 = 100. Bar 2 is (103 + 101 + 102) ÷ 3 = 102.

  3. 3

    Weight by volume

    VWAP = (100 × 1,000 + 102 × 3,000) ÷ (1,000 + 3,000) = 406,000 ÷ 4,000 = 101.5.

  4. 4

    Read the reference

The heavier-volume second bar pulls VWAP up to 101.5. A buy fill below that is better than the session average; above it is worse.

How to use

How to use it

1

Enter HLCV rows

High, low, close and volume for the periods.

2

Read the VWAP

The volume-weighted average price across all rows.

Formula

The formula, step by step

VWAP

VWAP = Σ(Typical price × Volume) ÷ Σ(Volume)

Typical price = (High + Low + Close) ÷ 3.

Common mistakes

Mistakes traders make

✗ Treating VWAP as a buy or sell signal on its own

✓VWAP is a benchmark and reference level, not a trigger. It works with context — trend, volume, and structure — never alone.

✗ Comparing VWAP to a moving average as if they are the same

✓A moving average weights time periods equally; VWAP weights prices by traded volume. They serve different purposes and reset differently.

✗ Using a multi-day VWAP for intraday judgment

✓VWAP conventionally anchors to one session. Stretching it across days mixes sessions and blurs the benchmark.

When to use

When this tool fits — and when it does not

Use it when

  • ✓Judging execution quality — whether your fill beat or missed the session average.
  • ✓As an intraday reference zone for pullbacks and mean-reversion context.
  • ✓When you have HLCV (high, low, close, volume) data to paste in.

Skip it when

  • ✗Building a standalone entry system purely off VWAP crosses.
  • ✗Expecting VWAP to matter equally in illiquid names with thin volume.
  • ✗Treating it as support/resistance rather than a volume-weighted benchmark.
Pro tips

Practical tips that actually help

Use it to grade your own fills

Buy below VWAP or sell above it and you traded better than the average participant. It is a free report card on execution.

Watch how price behaves around it

Because institutions benchmark to VWAP, price often reacts near it. Note those reactions as areas of interest, not mechanical signals.

Recompute per session, not across days

VWAP's meaning comes from a single day's volume profile. Fresh session, fresh VWAP.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is VWAP a trading signal?▾

VWAP is a reference level, not a signal by itself. It is typically combined with context such as trend and volume.

Why do institutions care about VWAP so much?▾

Because large orders are judged by how close their fills land to the session's average price. Beating VWAP means the desk executed well; missing it means the order moved the market or was mistimed.

What is the difference between VWAP and a simple moving average?▾

A moving average weights time periods equally; VWAP weights prices by the volume that actually traded at each level, so busy periods count for more. VWAP also resets each session, while moving averages carry forward.

Can I use VWAP on any timeframe?▾

VWAP is conventionally an intraday tool, anchored to the start of the session. It can be calculated on any data you paste in, but its meaning is strongest for a single trading day.

Why does price often seem to react around VWAP?▾

Because so many participants watch it. When large share of volume and orders cluster near the line, pullbacks to VWAP can act as areas of interest — though that is behavior, not a rule.
