FVG Structure Breakout 1:3 Strategy: 52 of 90 Segments Profitable, Deepest Drawdown 13.2%, Underperformed Buy-and-Hold

Publicly sharedBTCUSDT · 1mcrypto
What this strategy is
FVG Structure Breakout 1:3 Strategy

Bets on trend continuation after a breakout: enters only when price breaks the 20-bar high and holds above the moving average, with a 1:3 reward-to-risk exit; choppy markets full of false breakouts bleed the account.

price_breakout window (bars) 20unrealized_pnl lower level -1Position size (quote currency) 1

Every test sizes each position from its stop distance, so a single trade risks about 1% of the account — a risk-based position, not a fixed amount. Read the numbers above with that in mind.

Let's start with the conclusion: this strategy was profitable in 52 of 90 splits, with a median segment return of +1.5%, while doing nothing and simply holding the underlying over the same period produced an average segment return of +5.8%—in most cases it did not beat 'holding still'. The data facts are these: in the 90-segment backtest (90 different splits of the same 1-minute dataset, not 90 independent samples), the median segment return was +1.5%, the highest +23.5%, the lowest -7.5%, the deepest drawdown across the 90 segments was 13.2%, and no liquidation segment occurred. The average profit per trade was 2,789 USD and the average loss per trade was 1,024 USD, so winning trades were clearly larger than losing trades. The best segment was Round 9 Segment 3, with a segment return of +23.5% and a drawdown within that segment of 9.1%; the worst segment was Round 11 Segment 6, with a segment return of -7.5%, and the deepest drawdown of 13.2% also occurred in this segment. What is it betting on? In one sentence: it bets that after price leaves an FVG (price imbalance gap), the resulting structural breakout will continue, and through a 3:1 reward-to-risk framework it lets a few large winners that reach target cover the many small losers that get stopped out. This structure only holds when the trend can continue and winning trades actually reach the target. The 52/90 profitable-segment ratio shows that slightly more than half of the splits made money, but the gap between median +1.5% and the buy-and-hold mean +5.8% shows that its returns depend on a few smooth market runs rather than steady accumulation day after day. Its weaknesses are therefore clear. First, market structure: in ranging and low-volatility environments, breakouts fail frequently, stops are triggered repeatedly, winners do not reach the threefold target, and the advantage of the reward-to-risk structure disappears outright—the worst segment of -7.5%, accompanied by the deepest drawdown of 13.2%, is a sample of this state. Second, parameter sensitivity: the lookback window for structural breakout, the stop distance, and the reward-to-risk threshold almost determine all performance; changing any one of them could materially change the 52/90 ratio, so readers should treat it as 'a result under one parameter set' rather than an inherent property of the strategy. Third, sample structure: the 90 backtests come from 90 splits of the same data and are highly correlated with one another, so they cannot be read as 90 independent validations. Limitations that need to be made clear: lookback (structural breakout lookback window), stopPercent (stop distance), and risk_reward (the floating-profit threshold specification for the 3 reward-to-risk ratio) were not given in the original, and were filled in according to industry conventions rather than the original author's values; therefore all the numbers above correspond only to this parameter set. The reproduction scope is limited to these 90 segment splits; slippage and fill assumptions on the 1-minute timeframe were not separately tested. The splitting method itself is reproducible: 6 non-overlapping windows, repeated for 15 rounds, with the random seed saved, so anyone using the same seed can obtain exactly the same 90 splits. This content is a reproduction and verification based on historical data, does not constitute investment advice, and this platform does not recommend, rate, or rank anything.

Two-window comparison

The same strategy, two of its 90 windows side by side: the best-performing one and the worst drawdown. Same scale on both — if one looks smooth and the other jagged, that is the strategy's instability, not a chart artifact.
