Zcash's NU7 network upgrade has gone live, and the protocol change has left 12,224 ZEC held in the legacy Sprout pool outside the spendable supply under current rules. Cointelegraph reported on Nov. 6, 2026, that the affected funds are worth roughly $15 million. Sprout is Zcash's original shielded pool, so the stranded balance represents older shielded notes rather than all ZEC in circulation. The key effect is operational: those specific notes can no longer be moved through the network's normal spending path after the upgrade. That makes NU7 a protocol-level event with a direct consequence for a defined set of legacy holders.
NU7 matters here because Zcash's shielded pools have evolved over time, and older pools can require different spending conditions from newer ones. The 12,224 ZEC figure is narrow: it refers to funds still sitting in Sprout, not to the broader Zcash supply or to every shielded transaction. Once the upgrade's rules take effect, a Sprout note that was valid before may no longer satisfy the current validation requirements, which is why the balance is described as stranded. For affected holders, the practical issue is that ordinary wallet or transaction activity does not by itself resolve the status of those notes. The situation therefore centers on protocol compatibility rather than on user error or a single wallet failure.
The roughly $15 million estimate is a fiat-value reference for the 12,224 stranded ZEC, not an additional pool of money. Crypto reporting often pairs token amounts with dollar figures to make scale easier to grasp, and that is how the Cointelegraph report frames the impact. For technical purposes, the token count is the more direct measure because the protocol tracks ZEC amounts, while the dollar value moves with market pricing. The dual figures help readers understand both the size of the affected balance and why the event drew attention. They do not change the fact that the constraint applies to a specific legacy pool.
The report notes that a future network upgrade could potentially restore access to the stranded Sprout funds. That would require another protocol-level change rather than a routine transaction or wallet update, because the current NU7 rules are what leave the notes unspendable. No timeline or guarantee is provided in the summary, so the path back remains conditional on future development and network governance. The affected holders are therefore tied to the Zcash upgrade process, not to ordinary market activity. The episode illustrates how privacy-focused blockchain designs can create long-lived legacy states that later upgrades must explicitly address.
NU7 is a Zcash network upgrade that changes protocol rules for the blockchain. In this case, it has left 12,224 ZEC in the legacy Sprout pool unspendable under the current rules. The upgrade is significant because it directly affects how older shielded notes can be used.
The stranded balance is 12,224 ZEC, according to the Cointelegraph report. That amount is described as worth roughly $15 million at the time of reporting. The figure refers specifically to funds remaining in the legacy Sprout pool, not to all Zcash in circulation.
The NU7 upgrade changes the validation conditions for spending, and older Sprout notes no longer satisfy those conditions under current rules. As a result, the affected 12,224 ZEC cannot be moved through the network's normal transaction path. The issue is a protocol-level compatibility problem rather than a wallet-specific malfunction.
The report says a future network upgrade could potentially restore access to the stranded Sprout funds. That would require another protocol-level change, not a routine transaction or software update. No timeline or guarantee is provided, so restoration remains conditional on future development and network governance.

Sprout is Zcash's original shielded pool, used for private transactions in the network's earlier design. Zcash later developed additional shielded pools with different technical characteristics. The stranded funds are older notes that remained in Sprout rather than being moved to a newer pool.
