Which outside parties are involved in the mediation?

Oman has hosted talks with the Houthis, and the United Nations maintains a special envoy who shuttles among the parties. Saudi Arabia and Iran restored diplomatic relations in a deal announced in March 2023, which created an additional channel of communication. Western governments say Iran has supplied the Houthis with weapons and technology, a charge Tehran has denied.

Q: Is there a ceasefire in place?

A UN-brokered truce began in April 2022 and reduced fighting significantly, but it was not renewed when it expired in October of that year. Since then the parties have accused each other of violations, and mediation has largely continued through UN and Omani channels. A proposed road map covering a ceasefire and public-sector salary payments remains under discussion.

Saudi air defences intercepted drones and missiles as fighting between Saudi forces and Yemen's Houthi movement continues, Reuters reported. The interceptions point to a cross-border exchange that has become a recurring feature of a conflict now in its second decade.

Diplomacy Running Alongside the Fighting

Diplomatic efforts have continued even as military exchanges persist. Saudi Arabia and Iran, which Western governments and the Houthis' opponents say has provided the movement with weapons and technology, restored relations in a deal announced in March 2023, and Saudi officials have since pursued talks with the Houthis aimed at winding down their direct involvement. A UN special envoy continues to shuttle between the parties over a road map covering a ceasefire and salary payments for public employees. These tracks have not halted launches, which suggests that negotiations and military activity are proceeding in parallel rather than one displacing the other. Based on public news sources.

Frequently asked questions

What did Saudi Arabia intercept?▾

According to Reuters, Saudi Arabia intercepted drones and missiles as fighting with Yemen's Houthis continued. The report does not specify the exact number of projectiles, where they were engaged or what damage occurred, so the available information describes an interception event rather than a confirmed strike. Interceptions indicate that launches were detected and engaged before reaching their intended targets.

Why do the Houthis launch attacks toward Saudi Arabia?▾

The Houthis have described their cross-border launches as retaliation for air strikes by the Saudi-led coalition, which intervened in Yemen's civil war in 2015. Saudi officials present the interceptions as defensive measures protecting civilian infrastructure and airports. Because each side frames its actions as a response to the other, the exchanges have continued through multiple rounds of attempted de-escalation.

Does this affect shipping through the Red Sea?▾

Yemen lies next to the Bab al-Mandab strait, a key passage for vessels moving between Asia and Europe through the Suez Canal. When attacks on ships escalate, shipping companies have rerouted vessels around Africa, which lengthens voyages and increases insurance and freight costs. These decisions by shipowners and insurers are how a local conflict can affect global trade flows.
