Reuters reported that a Houthi strike on a Saudi airport killed 12 people, describing the incident as the worst attack on the kingdom in a decade. The report is dated October 10, 2026. In the material published so far, the agency attributes the strike to the Houthi movement but does not specify which airport was hit, what type of weapon was used, or the nationalities of those killed. Such details are typically confirmed later through statements from Saudi authorities or the Saudi-led coalition. The casualty figure of 12 is the central element distinguishing this incident from previous cross-border attacks.
The Houthi movement has controlled Yemen's capital, Sanaa, and much of the country's north since 2014, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in 2015 in support of Yemen's internationally recognised government. Cross-border drone and missile launches at Saudi territory have been a recurring feature of the conflict since then, with southern regions close to the Yemeni border among the most frequently targeted areas. In June 2019, an attack on Abha airport in southern Saudi Arabia killed one person and wounded more than 20, and a September 2019 strike on the Abqaiq and Khurais facilities temporarily halved the kingdom's crude output. Cross-border attacks declined markedly after a UN-brokered truce took effect in April 2022, although the truce lapsed later that year without a permanent settlement.
Describing a strike as the worst in ten years places it against the period that began with the coalition's 2015 intervention, when most cross-border incidents caused limited casualties or primarily damaged infrastructure. A single event with 12 fatalities on Saudi soil is therefore notable both in scale and in the nature of the target, since airports serve civilian passengers rather than military functions. Southern airports including Abha and Jizan have been affected before, with flight operations suspended or rerouted following earlier strikes. That carries weight because the kingdom has been investing heavily in aviation and tourism as part of its Vision 2030 economic diversification programme, which relies on dependable civilian air links. The reported casualty toll is the main reason this incident is being set apart from others in the same period.
The strike comes amid continued Saudi-Houthi contacts pursued alongside United Nations mediation, and after a March 2023 agreement between Riyadh and Tehran that lowered tensions between the two regional powers. Yemen's conflict has also produced one of the world's largest humanitarian crises, with millions of people dependent on international aid. In past incidents involving civilian sites, the Saudi-led coalition has issued statements and, in some cases, carried out retaliatory military action inside Yemen. Officials and mediators have previously cited cross-border attacks as an obstacle to sustaining talks. Reuters' initial report did not indicate what response, if any, has been announced following this strike.
According to Reuters, a strike attributed to the Houthi movement hit an airport in Saudi Arabia and killed 12 people, an incident the agency described as the worst attack on the kingdom in a decade. The initial report did not name the airport or specify the type of weapon used. Those details would typically be confirmed through official Saudi or coalition statements.
The Houthis are a Yemeni armed movement that took control of Sanaa and large parts of northern Yemen in 2014, which triggered a Saudi-led military intervention the following year. Since then the group has repeatedly launched drones and missiles at Saudi territory, framing the attacks as retaliation for the coalition's campaign in Yemen. The conflict has continued intermittently despite several rounds of mediation.
The ten-year window reaches back to 2015, when the coalition intervention began and cross-border attacks became frequent. Most earlier incidents caused relatively few deaths or mainly damaged infrastructure, such as the June 2019 strike on Abha airport, which killed one person and wounded more than 20. A single strike on a civilian airport with 12 fatalities is therefore being recorded as the deadliest in that period.

A UN-brokered truce that took effect in April 2022 sharply reduced cross-border attacks, but it lapsed in October that year without a permanent settlement. Saudi-Houthi contacts have continued alongside UN mediation, and Riyadh restored diplomatic ties with Tehran in March 2023. Even so, the underlying conflict has not been formally resolved.
Airports are civilian infrastructure, and strikes on them can lead to suspended flights or rerouting, as occurred after earlier attacks on southern Saudi airports such as Abha. That affects both local residents and the kingdom's broader plans to expand aviation and tourism under its Vision 2030 programme. The Reuters report did not state whether flight operations were interrupted after this incident.
