Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade has been deployed on the Sepolia testnet, one of the last major rehearsals before the change is activated on the mainnet. The upgrade is intended to improve the network's efficiency and scalability.

Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade launched on the Sepolia testnet on October 6, 2026, according to a report from Cointelegraph. Sepolia is one of the public networks Ethereum developers use to rehearse code changes before they reach the live chain, and this deployment is described as one of the final major rehearsals ahead of the upgrade's mainnet activation. Because test networks run the same client software as mainnet but carry valueless assets, a clean run there is a standard prerequisite before teams schedule the production change. The stated objective of the upgrade is to bring more efficiency and scalability to the Ethereum mainnet.
Ethereum does not push protocol changes onto its live network all at once; upgrades are packaged as hard forks and rolled out to test networks first. Each testnet gives client teams, infrastructure providers and application developers a chance to run the new rules against real software, contracts and tooling without putting user funds at risk. In past cycles, an upgrade has typically touched several test networks in sequence, and problems found in one rehearsal have often delayed or reshaped the ones that follow. Sepolia's position in that sequence matters because it is widely used by application developers and node operators, so a deployment there exercises a broader range of software integrations than a validator-focused network would.
According to the published description, Glamsterdam is aimed at making the mainnet more efficient and more scalable. The name is widely understood in the Ethereum community to combine two road-map tracks, Gloas and Amsterdam, which cover different parts of the protocol stack. Protocol changes of this kind generally work by altering how blocks are proposed, validated or how data is handled, which can lower the operational burden on node operators and raise the network's capacity ceiling. Whether those effects materialise at the expected scale only becomes measurable once the code is running on a network that carries real activity rather than test assets.
A hard fork requires coordinated action from anyone running Ethereum software. Validators, node operators, exchanges, wallet providers and layer-2 teams all need client versions that understand the new rules; nodes left running older software can fall out of sync with the network once the change takes effect. Testnet deployments exist largely to surface those incompatibilities early, when the cost of fixing them is still low. For that reason, the Sepolia run functions as much as an operational test for the wider ecosystem as it does as a technical test for core developers.
Glamsterdam is an Ethereum network upgrade intended to improve the efficiency and scalability of the mainnet, according to the published description. Its name is widely understood to combine two road-map tracks, Gloas and Amsterdam, that address different parts of the protocol. It has now been deployed to the Sepolia testnet as one of the final major rehearsals before mainnet activation.
Sepolia is a public Ethereum test network that runs the same client software as mainnet but uses assets with no market value. Developers, node operators and application teams use it to check that their software still works under new protocol rules without risking real funds. Because it hosts a broad mix of applications and infrastructure, a deployment there tests many more integrations than a single-purpose test network would.
Hard forks change the rules that every node and validator must follow, so an error on the live network could disrupt transactions or consensus. Testnets allow client teams and third-party operators to find bugs and incompatible software versions while the cost of fixing them is still low. Problems uncovered in these rehearsals have historically delayed or altered later stages of an upgrade cycle.

Ethereum has shipped a regular sequence of network upgrades in recent years, each preceded by testnet rehearsals and followed by debate over the next set of changes. Glamsterdam follows that established pattern, and its progress through test networks is the main publicly visible signal of how close it is to mainnet. Final activation timing is generally decided by client teams after testnet results have been reviewed, so the outcome on Sepolia feeds directly into that scheduling decision. Until activation occurs, the upgrade's effect on the mainnet remains untested at production scale.
No. A testnet deployment is a rehearsal, not the final activation, and the code still has to run on the mainnet before the change becomes permanent. Client teams typically review testnet results before deciding when to schedule the production rollout. Until that happens, the upgrade's behaviour at production scale remains unverified.
Anyone running Ethereum software may need to update, including validators, node operators, exchanges, wallet providers and layer-2 teams. Nodes that stay on older client versions can lose sync with the rest of the network once the new rules take effect. Testnet deployments give these operators an early opportunity to identify and resolve compatibility issues.
